Halloween Inspired Photoshoot

Mariah and I were fortune-tellers this last weekend so she dressed up in her costume again for this Halloween inspired photoshoot.

It was a quick shoot – we stayed on the property of where I live and took advantage of the spooky season vibes – it was grey and drizzly.

It’s so much fun to celebrate a season through photography – I love doing that! I’m super excited to share these photos.

Hallow’s Eve arrives today. Beware, the witches come out to play.

Photographer's Edition: How to Shoot and Edit in Harsh Light

When I first started taking photos I would have cringed and ran away from that situation. I only shot in the lighting situations that I stated above.

I have since challenged myself to shoot in all lighting situations and while I still need to keep practicing and improving, I still would like to share how I shot and edited this mid-day shoot.

Overall, it’s good to know how to work with light. It’s necessary as a photographer.

Sometimes we have to shoot in less than ideal situations where there is literally only a few candles or only artificial light like lamp posts and car headlights.

Sometimes we have to shoot mid-day or with chiaroscuro lighting. It varies.

So instead of fearing it, I am working to embrace all the lighting situations and improve in them and I want to share with you my process!

Portrait Edition: Fall Photos

I instantly made a model call because I knew that in a day or two all that color would vanish. Ashlyn Christina immediately responded, saying we could shoot the next day. We took advantage of the Dallas fall colors and I AM SO HAPPY. I’ve always wanted to have fall photos in my portfolio because I love vivid warm colors and fall is the most magical month.

I stayed up so late editing these because I couldn’t put them down until I was finished. These fall portraits just glow. The light, the colors, and Ashlyn snapped and I can’t get over it.

These fall photos have me drooling. A fall in Dallas. Who would have thought?

Creative Edition: Harsh Light & Fruit

Harsh light is not scary or ugly as that’s a wildly popular opinion for photographers and their clients. Instead, that mid day light can be a gateway to creativity and expression, working with the most beautiful element—light.

Jillian and I really enjoyed these portraits, exploring a Dallas park under a deep blue October sky and bright sun.

We had been wanting to do a fruit-themed shoot for months now.

We both loved the idea because not only is fruit an aphrodisiac but it’s also earthy, colorful, and expressive with its many textures and shapes.

Jillian was the perfect model for this harsh sunlight because she rocked that mid-day glare in her eyes so beautifully. Anyone that can squint at a camera and still look stellar is an excellent subject haha.

This shoot felt so connected to roots and the earth. I love a natural element in a shoot.

Couples Edition: Sunrise Lake Session

Watch the sun rise over a lake in the middle of nature with your boo….

So romantic!

You can have a morning like that with me AND get photos! A sunrise lake session is in the books and I want more of these.

I had so much fun on this lake session with Gwen and Jesse! There was a lot of laughing, dancing, and rock skipping. They’re the type of couple that is so relaxed with each other and comfortable in a shoot that it felt like we met up just to hang out.

I should have brought breakfast and it could have been an official date with me as third wheel, which I already advocate for on all shoots anyway haha.

Couples Edition : Barbie & Esteban

This Dallas couple came out to Lake Texoma to play in the water and climb rocks and explore barefoot with me through some rad nature and I AM IN LOVE.

You know why I love shooting with couples? They’re always down for an adventure together.

On my couples shoots, we are out exploring on land and adventuring together. Maybe it’s because it’s so different than a typical Netflix + pizza date night in pajamas so couples are like, “Hellll yeah, let’s get wild!”

You DFW couples—if you’re ready to have a barefoot adventure out in some dirt and wild then let me know because I am here and ready for you. Barbie and Esteban served.

Travel Edition : NYC in the Summertime

NYC in the summertime. So nostalgic. So whimsical. So carefree. Sounds like it would make a romantic movie or lighthearted book.

WRONG!

It's a concrete hell full of heavy, human air and relentless sun as its rays harshly reflect off glass windows above and burn straight down through your sweaty skin cells to your core. No air to breathe. No shade. No a/c inside buildings.

Maybe, despite all of my salty negativity, these photos will portray an illusion of fun, whimsical, carefree New York in the summertime. Either way, I had a blast on this trip because there's always so much to do and see in NYC and it never gets old to me.

Editorial Edition : Spring Showers

It was a grey, stormy day for a spring fashion shoot but what better weather for an April photoshoot? Tut tut it looks like spring!

Mckella (the makeup artist) and I built a team around the concept of a spring shoot with:

  • lightweight textures

  • whimsical patterns

  • pastel colors

  • romantic hairstyles

  • colorful makeup. No shame--we added glitter on the models' faces and hair and it was great.

Couples Edition : Olivia and Colton Explore NYC

The fun thing about shooting with couples, such as Olivia and Colton, is we always kick back with drinks and explore whatever we explore and are out to enjoy the day and that's what I'm all about.

NYC couples shoots are great for those who have an adventurous soul but can also kick it and people watch while sipping espresso (or a cocktail or a beer or yeah). Fun fact : Olivia decided to get an espresso, although she never drinks them, and hated it so much that her thick southern accent and remarks of disgust could probably be heard across the street. Probably one of my favorite moments of the shoot. Also, thanks Colton for buying my beer. You the real MVP.

Maternity Edition : Emily and Dennis Kelly

Working with couples and families is special because I am invited into their lives and I'm blessed to witness how they live and love and there's something so intimate about being a part of that. I also gain knowledge, wisdom, and insight into how people work and thrive because I'm constantly working with them in personal situations. Being photographed is pretty vulnerable so I'm thankful to be an artist that is invited into other people's bubbles.

Portrait Edition : Best of 2017

2017 has been a hell of a year.

I was an au pair in Italy for 3 1/2 months, I spent time in London, Scotland, New Jersey, New York City, and Kentucky, and I've also officially started my photography business.

Before this year, photography was my passion, my degree and homework, and my side hustle. However, starting this summer I have buckled down on learning business, marketing, and more! I'm making it my full time profession. WOO! It's terrifying but I also can't wait to reach goals and dreams.

Senior Portrait Edition : Rylee

It's such an honor to take important photos for someone because I get to visually illustrate how cool he or she is. And if y'all don't know Rylee, let me tell you, she's freaking cool.

The day of her shoot, we met up in Dallas and explored a bit. She took me to this sweet parking garage where we got amazing views of the Fountain Place as a backdrop. Fun Fact: my sister and I have always called this building the airplane building because of its shape. I'm always down for parking garages so I was super pumped for that. We also walked around the streets, visited the eye ball of Dallas, hung out under the lights at the Majestic theater, and just caught up on life. When I do urban portraits, I really enjoy walking around and exploring places, always on the lookout for light, colors, and design. We definitely found fun places to shoot that day and I can't wait to shoot in Dallas again!

Lifestyle Edition: Apple Picking and 6 Other October Traditions

I was just thinking about it today - who doesn't love Autumn? I don't know if Fall is the most loved season but I really think it's the least hated. Some people hate summer and winter as they are pretty extreme but there's always a craze around fall.

Fall is such a hauntingly beautiful season. Everything starts to die yet we adore the transition. In nature's cycle of death, vibrant colors, cooler weather, and glowing sunlight peaks. Plaid clothing, bonfires, ghost stories, and outdoor activities thrive. It's our last hoorah of the year before the holidays get crazy and the winter causes us to hibernate.

Fall is like a warm cozy hug and in that season October always holds an air of excitement.

Travel Edition: Top 10 Reasons Why I Miss London

I miss London. All the time.

There are always places while traveling that call my name that I know I will return to, or even have returned to, because I can't stay away. The Scottish Highlands, Italy, and London are the top ones I always go back to.

London is the most extraordinary city I’ve visited. It is vast, diverse, and rich in history.

Moreover, London is simply one of those places I feel homesick for even though it’s not my home.

I last visited London this May and am already planning to go back next year. Missing London is my part time job.

My brother-in-law asked me the other day what was the thing I missed most about London and my first answer was “pubs!” but he wanted a more serious answer so I had the idea to create this list to show why I’m always homesick for a city that I haven’t even lived in.

The top 10 reasons why I miss London:
